In all seriousness though, I just don't get how anyone could like such a smug, insufferable character. I'm honestly not trying to flamebait here, and I'm not being sarcastic. It actually does confuse me a bit, because she seems to me like someone who was practically tailor made for you to root to be defeated, and be glad when she actually got what was coming to her.

It's funny that you mention her woobieness, because, to me, that is the only real thing that redeems her... hell, I'd even go as far as saying it makes her a pretty decent character, and one of the more complex trolls. And yet, people who are seriously fanatical about her don't even want to acknowledge that side of her exists, meaning the smug side is actually what they like. Wow. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that is the impression I get. Thus, I'm back to square one, not really understanding much.
I did figure leather pants would be a reason, I guess I was just expecting more. Oh well.

Well, at the beginning I was just mainly "yeah, okay, psycho", but then I started realizing that all of the trolls were pscyhos in their own ways. Finally, I arrived at the end result that Trolls were so different from humans that I wouldn't try to liken them to human ideas of morals and ethics and stuff like that, and just focused on their personalities and what they did. And Vriska got to do all kinds of awesome stuff in the beginning (mind control, frickin' cool weapon, WoMDs, all the levels) that really made her feel like a character capable of doing stuff (together with Equius and Eridan).
Especially her interaction with the other trolls really got me. She was tough and strong, and if that made her a bitch, then I liked it. She was the top dog, and if she made some mistakes here and there, well, then that just showed that she washuman trollish. Sure, she was torturous towards Tavros and mean to Terezi, but I never liked those two very much; the former because of he never seemed do anything and the latter because she was so insufferably smug. As for her being responsible for Beq Noir...well, I must admit I didn't directly like it, but I understood her line of thinking.
But what really clinched it for me was that the look we got into her mind, and then especially the Woobie-moments, made me understand how Troll society was like. Her ambition and look at others lives really made me understand what kind of mindset these children grew up in, and then particularly the violent culture and the complicated romance. Because what she represented to me was a product of an incredibly different (and well thought out) way of living. She was a real character, a real kid, striving to fit all that society demanded of her, what her Lusus demanded from her, the image of her Ancestor and what she herself really wanted.
And now she's dead.

I think she was defin8ly one of the more complic8d characters, and I think that's a good part of why I ended up liking her. Personally, I always liked Terezi a lot more because she never needed powers to do anything. Even Vriska envied her for that. But at least I'm getting the idea that I was wrong about people not liking/acknowledging her more human side. That does clear a lot of things up.
